Wrestling: Picking Southland all-area lineup a weighty task

The SouthtownStar circulation area is as deep and tradition-rich in wrestling talent as any in the state. One of our teams, Sandburg, was the large-school state champion. Another, Lemont, advanced 10 wrestlers to the individual state tourney. Six individuals won state gold.

Sandburg’s Mitch Cook pulled off a spectacular comeback to lead an Eagles’ comeback to top Oak Park 30-24 and claim the Class 3A state title Saturday night in Champaign.

Montini dominated all three matchups Saturday, including a 53-12 win over Yorkville in the Class 2A final, to claim its fourth straight state crown.

Oak Park won five straight matches in the lower weights to pull away for a 35-21 win over Barrington, while Sandburg rallied to beat defending champ Glenbard North 29-25 to set up Saturday night’s Class 3A wrestling title match. Montini and Yorkville will wrestle for the Class 2A title.

Bowen’s bid to win the Public League’s first state wrestling trophy since 2000 ended with a 37-33 loss to Antioch Saturday morning in the Class 2A state quarterfinals in Bloomington.

Oak Park’s Darius Henry gutted out a 5-3 decision over Hinsdale Central’s George Tolbert to help give the Huskies the 47-19 win in Tuesday’s Class 3A sectional. Henry had left the team more than a month ago only to return to competition on Tuesday.

Mark Shealy wasn’t about to be the reason Barrington didn’t advance downstate. In the final match of Tuesday’s Class 3A Wheeling team sectional, Shealy clinched the Broncos’ third consecutive trip to the state finals with a pin at 182 over Grant’s Jonathan Wells, giving his side a 29-18 victory.
