Wrestling: Picking Southland all-area lineup a weighty task
Updated: March 1, 2012 6:16PM
Try filling out a lineup card of wrestlers from the Southland without offending anyone. We dare you.
The SouthtownStar circulation area is as deep and tradition-rich in wrestling talent as any in the state.
One of our teams, Sandburg, was the large-school state champion. Another, Lemont, advanced 10 wrestlers to the individual state tourney. Six individuals won state gold.
Picking one wrestler to represent the area in each of 14 weight classes was a daunting task. Five Southland wrestlers who reached state championship matches couldn’t, you’ll pardon the expression, make weight.
But we put together a 2012 SouthtownStar All-Area Wrestling Team that could take to the mats with anybody.
106
Kris Williams, Thornton: The Wildcats freshman captured his first championship in Class 3A and had a 21-2 record. He won the SouthWest Suburban title and was second at the sectional and regional. He edged out 2A runner-up Nkosi Moody, of Rich Central.
113
Mark Duda, Marist: The RedHawks sophomore was second in Class 3A for his second state medal and had a 36-3 record. He won sectional, regional, East Suburban Catholic and Lincoln-Way East titles and was third at the Dvorak.
120
Sebastian Pique, Sandburg: The Eagles junior took second in Class 3A for his second state medal and had a 43-4 record for the dual team champions. He won sectional, regional, SouthWest Suburban and Wheeling titles and was second at Hinsdale Central.
126
Eddie Klimara, Providence: The Celtics senior captured his second championship and fourth state medal in Class 3A and had a 43-1 record. He won sectional, regional, Chicago Catholic, Geneseo, Dvorak and Conant titles.
132
Mike Mizaur, Mount Carmel: The Caravan senior took third in Class 3A and had a 37-6 record. He won sectional, regional and Prospect titles and was second in the Catholic League.

Kyle Langenderfer, Lincoln-Way East: The Griffins junior captured his first championship and third state medal in Class 3A and had a 42-2 record. St. Rita’s Tim Corse, beaten 5-4 by Langenderfer for the 3A title, was edged again here.
145
Kevin Moylan, Stagg: The Chargers senior captured his first championship and second state medal in Class 3A and had a 45-1 record. Mount Carmel’s Bryce Brill, who beat Moylan in the sectional but lost the rematch for the state title, misses out by the slimmest of margins.
