Wrestling: For openers, Marist quenches thirst with seven up

After dropping its first preliminary match at Thursday’s Class 3A state finals, Marist went on a roll that one doesn’t often see.

The RedHawks won their next seven matches to qualify all but one of their qualifiers for Friday’s quarterfinals at Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Marist advanced Mark Duda (113 pounds), Mario Leveille (120), Peter Andreotti (152), Alex Benoit (170), Josh Pruitt (195), Tom Howell (220) and Josh Hickey (285).

“It’s nice to get the first one out of the way with a win and it puts you in a better position for Friday,” Marist coach Brendan Heffernan said. “They’re all tough from here on out, but we’re looking forward to Friday and it’s going to be exciting.”

Opening day winners for Sandburg were Sebastian Pique (120), John Pellegrino (126), Mitch Cook (138), Colin Holler (145) and Ricky Robertson (170).

Mount Carmel’s preliminary winners were Mike Mizaur (132), Bryce Brill (145), Notay Jackson (160) and David Denne (220).

Lockport advanced four to the quarterfinals: Brian Rossi (106), Austin Strzelczyk (113), Shaun’Qae McMurtry (160) and Brad Johnson (195).

Lincoln-Way Central had two winners, Robbie Mikenis (132) and Tyler Schneider (152).

Beside Cook, other preliminary winners at 138 pounds were Lincoln-Way East’s Kyle Langenderfer, St. Rita’s Tim Corse and T.F. South’s Blake Tisza.

Also advancing were Homewood-Flossmoor’s Mike Burke (106), Thornton’s Kris Williams (106), Providence’s Eddie Klimara (126) and Stagg’s Kevin Moylan (145).

Other winners at heavyweight were Eisenhower’s Dion Wells and Andrew’s Cory Chojnowski.

In Class 2A, Lemont went 6-4, getting victories from Jake Latanski (126), Glen Malecki (132), Jake Kaminsky (152), Mark Kirkman (160), Eric Kirkman (170) and Chris Giatras (182).

“It’s a pretty big deal for us to get six guys into the quarterfinals and we’re hoping to do well again in the next round,” Latanski said. “We all wrestled with a lot of aggressiveness today.”

Also winning matches were Rich Central’s Nkosi Moody (106), Tinley Park’s David McDonald (113), Rich East’s Scottie Bonds (120) and Oak Forest’s Jay Muller (132).

Other winners in Class 2A were Bremen’s Chris Wright (160), Marian Catholic’s Nathan Jackson (170) and Crete-Monee’s Austin Rosenfeldt (285).

In Class 1A, Ag. Science’s Mahmoud Shalabi (132) and Illiana Christian’s Zach Groen (170) advanced.
