Wrestling: Montini rolls at Lemont sectional

One week after beating Lemont and crowning nine individual champions at the Evergreen Park Regional, Montini dominated the sectional, securing eight individual champions and qualifying 13 of their 14 varsity starters for the state meet at Assembly Hall.
“Every single one of our matches is recorded on camera,” Montini coach Israel Martinez said. “The coaches go through and watch all that footage, and we dissect what our strengths and weaknesses are. It’s that kind of preparation that gives us an edge at these meets.”
Michael Sepke (126 pounds), Chris Garcia (132), and Drew Vrbenec (138) engaged in championship round rematches from the regional finals.
Each proved victorious.
Sepke took a 13-4 win over Jake Latanski of Lemont. Garcia beat Fenton’s Ray Bunker 10-6 and Vrbenec eked out a 3-0 decision over Fenton’s Sean Havlovic.
Other individual champions for Montini were: Tommy Pawelski (106), Jordan Laster (113), KeVon Powell (120), Xavier Montalvo (145) and Anthony Ferraro (195).
Pawelski handed Rich Central freshman Nkosi Moody the first defeat of his prep career, winning an 8-4 decision.
“Qualifying 13 guys is awesome. It really shows the reward at the end of the year,” Martinez said. “During the season, you’re down and out, all our coaches are hard on you, and you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
“All of a sudden, you start seeing the light. You start seeing success and getting rewards. We’re on a roll; we’re ready to go,” Martinez said.
Lemont claimed two individual champions: Jake Kaminsky won the 152 pound crown and Chris Giatras navigated a tough 182 pound field.
The remaining champions came from four different schools. Marian Catholic’s Nathan Jackson won the 170 pound crown. Bremen’s Chris Wright took 160. Nazareth’s Malcom Watson was first at 220 and Hillcrest’s Matt Daniels (285) took home the heavyweight division.
