Burlington Central has hired Wade Maisto as girls softball head coach, replacing Cray Allen. Maisto previously was the Rockets’ head coach from 1984 to 1998.

Marist junior first baseman Haley Richy smashed a towering grand slam in the fifth inning that capped a 5-0 run and lifted the RedHawks to a 5-0 win over Bartlett in the Class 4A state title game Saturday at EastSide Centre. The RedHawks, once 15-15, ended the season with 12 consecutive wins.

Down to its last strike Friday against defending state champion Moline, Bartlett not only tied the game, but put up five runs in the top of the seventh for a come-from-behind 7-3 win. A three-run home run by sophomore Kayla Haberstich capped the rally and propelled the Hawks to a berth in Saturday’s state final against Marist.

But after a mid-May team meeting in “the chapel,” the RedHawks came into the postseason on a roll and haven’t slowed down since, winning 10 straight.
