Softball: Maine West drops Glenbrook North

Glenbrook North third baseman Courtney Chron retired Maine West’s final two batters in the top of the fifth inning of Friday’s Class 4A Niles West Sectional semifinal.

After the Spartans capitalized on three Maine West errors to tie the game at three in the subsequent half inning, Chron retired Hanna Udischas to begin the top of the sixth. Chron ran her streak of consecutive putouts to four by recording the next out, but, unfortunately for Glenbrook North, it was Udischas who made the sixth inning’s second out.

Maine West used a barrage of singles, three Spartan errors and one double to score six runs during that stretch. In doing so, the Warriors turned a tight game into an eventual 10-4 victory.

“We were confident,” said Maine West No. 9 hitter Gina Larucci, who hit a double to drive in the go-ahead run in the sixth. “We knew that we had to come back and we had to pull together. They scored a couple runs and we needed to get them back. We came together and we did it as a team.”

The Warriors (25-10), who will play New Trier at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Niles West Sectional final, hit as a team in the sixth inning, but it was the top of its order which hurt Glenbrook North (26-7) throughout the game.

Holly Wengerski, Angela Cruz, Abbey Herling and Katie Fitzgerald all recorded at least three hits against Glenbrook North’s pitchers. Cruz had four hits, and was driven in by Fitzgerald (three hits, five RBIs) on three different occasions.

“I think we were (confident going into the sixth inning) because we saw that it was 3-3 and we know that we’re capable of coming back in close games like that,” Chron said. “I guess we just didn’t have it.”
