Softball: Trinity’s Chase Machain does it all against Homewood-Flossmoor

Trinity junior Chase Machain stole the show Friday as she held Homewood-Flossmoor to one run on three hits in six innings and drove in four at the plate in a 7-3 victory Friday.

Machain got the Blazers (22-5) on the scoreboard in the first with an RBI groundout and followed with an RBI single in the third and a two-run double in the fourth.

Senior third baseman Taylor Lang, who will play for Triton College next season, ripped a pair of singles, scored twice and stole two bases in her final regular-season home game at the Triton field.

The top of the Trinity lineup provided plenty of offense as leadoff hitter Abby Ramirez was 1-for-3, scored two runs and swiped three bases, while Ashley Klauss produced three hits in four trips scored twice, had two steals, and drove in two runners.

“We controlled the game, especially early we did a nice job defensively, and Chase did a good job of getting them to go after her pitches and rack up some strikeouts (six),” Trinity coach Bob Osborne said. “We hit the ball well, had some timely hitting and Chase had four RBIs and then we manufactured that seventh run, which was good since they scored a couple in the seventh to make the game closer.”

Machain didn’t allow the Vikings (14-10) a hit until the sixth inning when leadoff hitter Angela Roberts and Ciara Adkins both slapped singles to right field ahead of Kaitlyn Shereyk’s run-scoring hit.

Trinity’s other seniors, Monica Garcia, Brittany Bura and Marikate Marino, played flawless defensively but were hitless against H-F pitcher Sarah Burke (eight hits, seven strikeouts, three walks). Bura pitched the seventh inning and allowed two runs on three hits and struck out a batter.

“We struggled a little bit at the plate today,” Homewood-Flossmoor coach Katie Rice-Hoger said. “We were missing a few key players who had prior commitments since this game was just recently added to our schedule, so that hurt us some.

‘‘We struggled but I saw some positive things, too. Sarah (Burke) threw well on the mound but Trinity is a good team and they got some key hits. She usually averages 10-11 strikeouts a game, and she and (catcher) Jocelyn Velazquez work well together and I feel they always give us a chance to win.”
