Brigit Ieuter keeps getting better each time out, and Thursday was the highlight of the season so far.
The New Trier senior pitcher struck out nine and threw her first no-hitter of the spring in a 7-0 win over Glenbrook South in Glenview.
“The first part of the season I was not as sharp as I hoped to be,” said Ieuter, who will play at Colgate next season. “I just had to stay focused and get into the right mindset.”
The Trevians missed out on an opportunity early to put away the Titans, but they left runners on second and third with no outs. They made up for it in the third with two runs to lead 3-0.
New Trier scored another in the fourth and added three in the seventh to improve to 6-3 and 2-0 in the Central Suburban South.
Eileen Hurley headlined the offense by going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Ryan Lee drove in two runs.
“Brigit demonstrates great maturity,” New Trier coach John Cadwell said. “Even when she’s not feeling her best, she’s going to give us a good performance. She’s been such an important part of how are team is developing.”
Glenbrook South coach Kay Sopocy continues to believe in her team despite the Titans dropping to 5-11 and 1-1 in league play. The Titans started three seniors and five sophomores Thursday.
“We didn’t generate enough offense to score,” she said. “My goal for us is to get better each game, and we accomplished some goals (Thursday).”
Jen Zucker, one of two returning starters, did her part in the circle, but the offense never got going against Ieuter.
“We win as a team, and we lose as a team,” the Beloit-bound Zucker said. “I know all the girls are trying their best.
“We’re a young team, but it’s a great group of girls. We have a lot of upcoming talent that shows hope for next year’s team.”
