Lyons’ Alex Chatt, Morgan Park Academy’s Jerricka Boone advance to quarters

A year ago, Lyons’ Alex Chatt was forced to withdraw in the sectional singles finals due to an injury to her right hip. The injury persisted, forcing her to miss the state finals.
After spending the past year rehabbing and playing tennis, the sophomore has come back stronger this year, advancing to the state quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 victory Friday over Glenbrook South’s Caroline Ryba.
“The hip feels real good,” said Chatt, who will meet Grayslake North’s Kelly Poggensee-Wei in the quarters today at Prospect. “I am a bit tired now. It has been a long day and a long week. But I will be ready tomorrow.”
Chatt, along with the other quarterfinalists, had to play three matches Friday in an attempt to catch up from Thursday’s inclement weather, which forced postponement of the second round.
In the match of the day, Morgan Park Academy’s Jerricka Boone rallied to defeat Lake Forest’s Elizabeth Zordani 6-4, 6-7 (11-9), 6-0.
“I struggled a bit today,” said Boone, who will meet Carmel’s Brienne Minor in the quarterfinals. “I got mad at myself after the second [set] where I had three match points. I pushed myself hard in the last [set].”
Others advancing to the quarterfinals include Wheaton Warrenville South’s Keisha Clousing, who defeated Plainfield Central’s Ali Foster 6-3, 6-2 and Deerfield’s Alexis Casati, who eliminated Clousing’s teammate, Emma Wi, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Hinsdale Central’s top-seeded and defending doubles champions Marika Cusick and Caroline Lorenzini advanced to the quarters by topping Glenbrok North’s Anna Zelechonok and Katrine Zhadovich 6-2, 6-3.
The No. 2-seeded doubles team of Alexxis Kiven and Kendall Kirsch of Stevenson remained undefeated and will meet Natalie Whalen and Kendall Scruggs in the quarterfinals.
