New Trier’s Kristie Woodbury and Lauren Van Solkema couldn’t understand why their No. 3 doubles match was attracting a lot of attention.
Then they figured out that their match with Hinsdale Central’s Katie Lee and Rugile Valivnaite would decide the winner of the Lake Forest quad Saturday.
Woodbury and Van Solkema then stepped up their play to win 7-5 and 7-5, coming back from a 5-4 deficit in the final game to give the Trevians the 3-2 win.
“It was exciting,” Woodbury said. “There were lots of people watching us. It was great to give us the win.”
No. 2 New Trier had earlier defeated both Lake Forest and Deerfield 3-2. The Trevians won both singles matches against Hinsdale Central and dropped the firsr two doubles matches.
“It was a very good day for us,” New Trier coach Allison Rose said. “And both Kristie and Lauren battled hard for us.”
It had all the feel of the state finals with four of the top teams in the state competing on a cool, blustery day.
“It didn’t get any better than this,” Hinsdale Central coach Robin Kramer said. “All the power was assembled in one place.”
The No. 1 Red Devils beat Lake Forest 3-2, then toppled Deerfield 4-1 before their final match with New Trier.
The Red Devils number one doubles group of Marika Cusick and Caroline Lorenzini won all three of their matches without losing a set. The same held true of their number two team. Kristy Hamilton and Jackie Altasarna won the first two matches while Alex Solovyen stepped in for Altansarna in the match against New Trier and had to withdraw against the Trevians Carol Finke.
Deerfield’s Alexis Casati won both of her number one singles’ matches. She beat Solovyen 7-6, 6-4 and Finke 6-1, 6-2.
