WW South tops defending state champ

Wheaton-Warrenville South stunned defending state champion Lake Park and runner-up York at the York 3A sectional Friday in Elmhurst.

WW South scored 133 points to finish comfortably ahead of Lake Park’s 82 and York’s 79.

Titus Davis led the way in the long jump from Wheaton South with a jump of 23’-2.50”.

“Going in I felt pretty good,” said Davis, who was second in the 200 with a 22.24 and qualified for state.

“My coach told me to relax even more on my last jump and I did. I got off a real good jump.”

WW South also had winners in the High Jump from Alec Brezeau (6’-5”), the 4x200 relay (1:27.58), Phabian Clark in the 110 High Hurdles (15.27), Charlie Pinedo in the 200 (22.11), Max Heyden in the 400 (49.62) and the 1600 relay (7:52.60).

“Good competition brings out the best in athlettes,” WW South coach Ken Helberg said. “The night was perfect. It was the first time we had decent weather and it showed.”

Jack Driggs of York won the 1,600 (4:19.10) and the 3,200 (9;16.85).

The Kline brothers of Lake Park easily finished ahead of the field in the shot and the discuss Jermaine won by out throwing his brother in the shot 63’-1” to 61’-10” and 185-1” to 177’-0” in the discuss.

Zach Ziemek of Lake Park won the pole vault (15’-0”) and the triple jump (48’-2.50”).
