Boys Cross Country: Luke O’Connor, Jones cruise to sectional title

The sixteenth-ranked team in the nation according to showed why everyone is so high on them Saturday morning. Jones, which had five of the top six finishers in Saturday’s Class 2A Fenton boys cross country sectional, cruised to an easy win with 17 points. The Bison placed four runners in the top 20 to finish a distant second with 72 points.

“I didn’t think I was going to get it at the end,’’ said Jones senior Luke O’Connor, who won the race in 15:16.37. “I don’t usually have strong kicks at the end, so it was a little worrisome, but I’m glad I pulled it out at the end.’’

St. Viator, which had two runners finish in the top 10, finished with 84 points. Mather had 113 and Notre Dame rounded out the top five with 144 points.

Jamison Dale (15:24.73), Kirby Lawson (15:28.45) and Peter Schaible (15:38.31) finished second, third and fifth for the Eagles. St. Viator’s Nick Brey came in at 15:35.95 to place fourth.

Other advancing individuals included Mount Carmel’s Dan O’Keefe (16:10.22), U-High’s Jacob Meyer (16:43.71) and Max Volchenboum (17:01.95), St. Patrick’s Anthony Campanaro (16:51.2), Little Village’s Alex Bermudez (17:00.47), Elmwood Park’s Ricky Wojcik (17:00.76) and Bulls Prep’s Joshuah Hernandez (17:07.2).
