After missing state last year by the slimmest of margins, the Palatine cross country girls team had sweet redemption this time.
The Pirates scored 70 points – nearly a 30-point victory over second-place Barrington – to win the 3A Schaumburg Sectional on Saturday at Busse Woods.
In the 21-team field, Prospect (116), Schaumburg (162) and Gurnee Warren (178) were the other three teams advancing to state on Nov. 3.
“We need to tighten up; our fifth runner needs to be a lot closer to our fourth, but I think as a whole we did a nice job today,” Barrington girls coach Debbie Revolta said. “I’m proud of our kids. I thought we did a great job.”
Prospect senior Brooke Wolf won the race in 17 minutes, 44.26 seconds. Buffalo Grove freshman Kaitlyn Ko followed four seconds after to take second and is the only individual advancing from her team.
Joining them at Peoria are Cary Grove’s Talia Duzey (17:51.17), McHenry’s Lauren Opatrny (17:56.58), Fremd’s Kelly Breen (18:03.40), Libertyville’s Krisit Del Prato (18:12.29), Lake Forest’s Helen Schlachtenhaufen (18:13.61) and Mundelein’s Ellie Palacios (18:14.56).
Boys Cross Country
Prospect senior Quentin Shaffer played rabbit throughout the boys race, pacing the 3-mile course in 14:59.07 for the individual win.
Lake Forest senior Billy Bund came in second overall with a time of 15:02.40 and will join Shaffer at state next week.
“The strategy was to just go out there and get to a good start so that you don’t get caught up by that tree over there, just stay with the lead pack for a mile of two, then try and break away from that,” Bund said. “(I) still tried to conserve some energy for next week but still put in a strong effort.”
Lake Zurich (104) won the meet. Barrington (136) ousted Palatine (137) by just one point for second. Hershey (178) and Highland Park (200) came in fourth and fifth, respectively; all five will race at state next Saturday.
Five other advancing individuals are: Buffalo Grove’s Steven Salvano (15:11.08), McHenry’s Jesse Reisr (15:21.71), Hoffman Estate’s Billy Thomas (15:24.26), Warren’s Martin Martinez (15:28.36) and Libertyville’s Nick Korhumel (15:30.89).
