Marika Cusick and Caroline Lorenzini know they have a chance to make state history this weekend. They just don’t think about it as often as everyone else does.
The Hinsdale Central doubles team will attempt to become the first in IHSA history to win three consecutive girls state championships. The feat has been accomplished twice in boys tennis. The state meet begins Thursday and is hosted by Buffalo Grove High School.
“I don’t think about it,” Lorenzini said. “We just try to do our best.”
“It’s not about the ‘three’ thing,” Cusick said. “It’s just about winning.”
The seniors won their third consecutive sectional title together at the Lyons Sectional on Saturday at the Score Tennis and Fitness Center in Countryside. They beat teammates Tiffany Chen and Katie Lee in the final 6-4, 6-3.
For Cusick, it was her fourth sectional title, since freshman year she took first with partner Kristy Hamilton.
This year’s title defense looks a little different than a year ago when Cusick, of Hinsdale, and Lorenzini, of Clarendon Hills, combined to win 20 matches against one loss. Due to college visits and injuries, they competed as a pair in just nine matches this season, winning them all. They are a combined 55-1 over three years.
Despite a short résumé, both expect to be named the tournament’s No. 1 seed later this week.
“We’re pretty confident. You can’t be overconfident,” Cusick said.
“We still have work to do this week,” Lorenzini said. “We will have a lot of practice sets this week.”
Lorenzini verbally committed to the U.S. Military Academy last month, while Cusick has not made a college decision.
Another milestone they can achieve will be giving the Red Devils boys and girls doubles teams their second pair of back-to-back state titles in the last three years.
Hinsdale Central’s Alex Hagermoser and Peter Heneghan won the boys state doubles title in the spring. Previously, Dan Ballantine and Ian Tesmond won in spring of 2010, followed by Cusick and Lorenzini’s first title that fall.
Five previous girls doubles teams have won back-to-back state championships, including two from Hinsdale Central. Hinsdale Central’s Katie Williams won a doubles crown in 1998 and in 2000 with different partners.
