Girls Swiming: Lyons tops Oak Park

In the opening weeks of the season, Lyons girls swimming coach Kurt Johns was surprised by the level of depth throughout his team.

That surprise wore off weeks ago, yet Johns and the Lions once again showed their depth in Thursday night’s dual meet against Oak-Park River Forest.

Lyons defeated the Huskies 124-64 in Western Springs. Johns’ squad won eight of the meet’s 12 events even though most members on the team are currently battling mid-season fatigue.

“We’re at that tough point in the season where girls are (swimming) the times they’ve been going the last couple of weeks,” Johns said. “We kind of feel like, as coaches, we’re more psychologists now than coaching. But yeah, I have been surprised at the type of depth we’ve had across the board. It’s been a very pleasant surprise.”

Lyons immediately pulled away from the Huskies Thursday night. The Lions’ 200-yard medley relay squad — which included Kelley Garrow, Elizabeth Murphy, Kristine Rosenberger and Elly Vitek — began the meet with a victory, and then the team’s three swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle built an unconquerable lead.

Lauren Rosenberger won the 200-yard freestyle — the meet’s second swimming event — and was followed by Louisa Hoffman and Garrow, who finished second and third respectively. The Lions finished first and second in the meet’s next three events.

Although they faced a large deficit at the midpoint of the meet, Oak Park-River Forest fought their own mid-season fatigue to finish strongly. Alanna Dassoff (100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke) MaryClare Stannard (500-yard freestyle) and Chloe Guhlstorf (100-yard breaststroke) combined to give the Huskies four event victories.

“This is one of those meets, at this point in the season, where everyone’s in pain and tired,” Dassoff said. “This wasn’t terrible and nothing to be ashamed of. There were a lot of girls who stepped up and had really good individual times.”

In addition to victories in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle, Lyons won the following events: 200-yard IM (Vitek), 50-yard freestyle (Kristine Rosenberger), diving (Kelly Ryser), 100-yard butterfly (Hoffman), 200-yard freestyle relay (Kristine Rosenberger, Hoffman, Kristen Young, Mackenna Dunn) and 400-yard freestyle relay (Kristine Rosenberger, Dunn, Hoffman, Vitek).
