Caroline Lorenzini has always wanted to play tennis in college. It wasn’t until a conversation with her father, Ron, before she considered going to a service academy.
Lorenzini, a two-time state champion as a doubles player at Hinsdale Central, verbally committed Sept. 22 to play next season at Army. Lorenzini, a Clarendon Hills resident, is a Four-Star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net and has an opportunity with partner Marika Cusick to become the state’s first three-time state doubles champions in girls tennis history. Lorenzini and Cusick became the third Devils doubles team to win back-to-back state titles. There have been six doubles teams to win two state titles since the state tournament began in 1972.
Lorenzini chose Army over Saint Louis and Navy.
“Ever since I was little I wanted to play tennis in college,” Lorenzini said.
She made the commitment toward receiving an athletic scholarship at Army, but is still working on forms and documents to gain formal acceptance to West Point.
The Black Knights play in the Patriot League and already feature one other Chicago area player in Maine South graduate and Army freshman Haley O’Connor, who did not play tennis in high school. O’Connor competed on the regional and national levels within the U.S. Tennis Association. O’Connor’s doubles partner and twin sister, Audrey, is playing tennis at Illinois.
“[West Point] is a really pretty school,” Lorenzini said. “I loved the team and I love the coach [Paul Peck].”
Lorenzini is the oldest of four brothers and sisters who play tennis out of the Hinsdale Racquet Club. Caroline was a J. Kyle Braid Leadership Award nominee in 2010 at Central.
She was a Marion Wood Baird Cup finalist in the past year and placed second in the USTA National Doubles in July 2011.
Lorenzini will compete in the West Suburban Silver meet Friday and Saturday at Proviso West.
