Michael Hultquist shot a 2-under 68 to earn medalist honors Tuesday to led Loyola to the tournament title at its own regional at Sportsman’s Country Club in Northbrook.
The Ramblers posted a 12-over 292 to easily outdistance New Trier (310) and Evanston (312). Niles West narrowly missed out on the fourth spot at next week’s sectional tournament with a 318.
Hultquist made five birdies, one double bogey and one bogey on the day.
“It was good to get out there and beat New Trier,” Hultquist said.
Senior Creighton Helms (73), junior Peter Leinenweber (74) and junior Michael Abrahamson (77) rounded out Loyola’s scoring foursome.
“We knew we were capable of getting out of the regional without going too crazy,” Loyola coach Tim Kane said. “My mantra in October is to make pars. The guys did that.”
Austin Rendell led the Trevians with a 74, while Central Suburban League South champion Will Seaman followed with a 76.
Evanston posted three scores in the 70s, headlined by junior Jackson Mihevc’s 74. Junior Jake Casati (78) and senior James Hageman (79) also turned in good performances.
“The nerves were up, and we played tight at the start,” Evanston coach Jed Curtis said. “But we finished really strong and in a fashion we have talked about.
“We’re excited to move on, but this sectional will be a tough road.”
Niles West junior Nate Lee finished second to Hultquist with an even-par 70. Teammates Brandon Moy (80), Skyler Le Vine (80) and Andy Garcia (88) also advanced to Monday’s New Trier Sectional at Winnetka Golf Club.
“All of us have seen each other before,” Kane said. “It’s going to be fun because this is what counts. We will see what we are made of Monday.”
