Head bear

Lake Zurich has promoted assistant David Proffitt to head football coach. Proffitt, the Bears’ defensive coordinator for the past six years, will replace Bryan Stortz, who has taken the head coaching job at Rock Island. Proffitt has been coaching high school football for 25 years, including 10 seasons as the head coach at Marian Central (1991-2001).

Simeon star

Simeon outfielder Corey Ray has been picked to play in the Under Armour All-America Game scheduled for Aug. 18 at Wrigley Field. Ray, a junior, has committed to play at Louisville. He batted .415 with 14 stolen bases and 45 runs scored last season.

Hawkeye haul

Loyola senior Jack Richmond committed to play baseball for Iowa last week. The 6-4 left-hander finished with a 2.77 ERA last season as a junior. Richmond’s best effort might have been his three-hit shutout against Mount Carmel in the playoffs. Other area players off to Iowa next season are Jimmy Frankos (Maine South), Ryan Borucki (Mundelein), Blake Hickman (Simeon) and Devin Pickett (Marian Catholic).
