Q-and-A with Colleen Rynne, Marian Catholic volleyball
Rynne, 16, of Oak Forest, is a junior setter in her first full season as a varsity player. She also plays soccer at Marian.
How does it feel to be playing on state finals weekend?
It’s a dream come true. I’ve never been this excited in my entire life. It’s one of those things you never thought could be possible. But it is.
What’s the coolest thing about being a setter?
Everyone having their eyes on you to see what play you’re going to make is exciting.
Was Marian your first choice?
I was deciding between McAuley and Marian, but when I shadowed here I felt comfortable and at home.
Any significance to your number (9)?
Yeah. Mia Hamm, the soccer player. She’s my inspiration because she’s the best of the best and that’s what I’ve always wanted to be.
Which teammate has a hidden talent we just need to know about?
Nikki Manno, our libero, whenever she laughs she snorts every time.
What player from another school would you love to have as a teammate?
Mallory Salis, of Marist. She’s the best outside I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It would be awesome to set her.
Who is your dream celebrity prom date?
Ryan Gosling. He’s the perfect guy. In “The Notebook” he was so sweet and super-cute.
Away from the court, are you a tomboy or a girly-girl?
A straight-up tomboy. I love playing any sport that my brothers want to play. I never wear makeup outside of school. I like to watch sports with my dad.
What opponent gets you the most cranked up to play?
Probably Kelly Marcinek, from Marist. I’ve known her since I was in 12s for club ball. Then she played here and left for Marist. Seeing her on a different side is weird. But it was fun playing against her this year.
Is cheerleading a sport?
In my opinion, no. I don’t really think it takes a lot to do, but that’s just my opinion.
You’re at the mall. What’s the first store you make a beeline for?
Wet Seal is my favorite store. It has the fashion that I love.
What’s your favorite food?
Pasta. I could eat that all day.
Are you messy or a neat freak?
I’d have to go with messy. I’m not really good about keeping my room clean and my locker’s a mess. But it doesn’t bother me.
What irritates you more than anything else?
When kids tap on the desk when I’m taking a test. I just have to have silence to concentrate.
Does Lindsay Lohan belong in jail?
I don’t think she belongs in jail, I just think she’s needs a lot of help, the way she acts.
Name a celebrity who is a good example for young women.
Taylor Swift is a good one. She’s really presentable. She doesn’t do a lot of partying. I would say she’s a role model.
What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you on the volleyball court?
Ohh, gosh. Me and my friend had this handshake where you had to jump up in the air. One time we jumped and collided and we both fell on the floor. It was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever had happen. But later I laughed about it.
How long does it take you to get ready for school in the morning?
Ohhh, boy. When I want to do everything, it takes probably an hour to an hour and a half. So I get up really early when I want to look presentable.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years I see myself as a junior high teacher, teaching math.
