New Trier takes down rival Evanston

New Trier won its first sectional championship last year since 2006.
If this weekend’s play was any indication, the Trevians believe more good things are to come this fall.
New Trier dominated its own invitational, highlighted by Saturday’s 25-18, 25-12 win over rival Evanston in the championship match. The Trevians never lost a set in finishing 5-0 to win the title for a second consecutive season.
“We are so strong and have so much size,” 6-foot-4 senior middle hitter Kathryn Polkoff said. “We have so much potential, and we are excited to see where it takes us.”
New Trier spread the offense around against the Wildkits, who came into the title match with only one loss this season.
Katie Fauntleroy led the Trevians with six kills, while Brittani Steinberg added five. Sophomores Hayley Fauntleroy and setterTaylor Tashima each contributed four kills. Tashima also had 16 assists and four aces in the victory to run New Trier to 7-0.
New Trier went 3-0 in its pool Friday before beating Glenbrook North 25-21, 25-19 in Saturday’s semifinals. Evanston topped Loyola 28-26, 25-15 in the other semifinal. It was the second time this season the Wildkits beat the Ramblers.
“We don’t want to talk about our potential,” said New Trier coach Hannah Hsieh, who took the Trevians to four state tournaments in a row from 2003-2006. “This was a good tournament for us to showcase ourselves. We need to keep up that level of intensity and not let up.”
