Western Springs native and former Lyons star Kelly Maley will take over the boys volleyball program at Hinsdale Central after serving as an assistant to Len Serwat the past two seasons.
Maley played volleyball at Miami, Ohio, and became an assistant athletic director at Hinsdale Central last season. She has coached at every level of girls basketball since arriving at the school seven years ago. Maley has been the interim varsity co-coach, assistant varsity coach, sophomore and freshman coach. She gave up coaching basketball to concentrate on her duties within the athletic department.
Maley again becomes the second head coach in her family, following her father, Jim, the varsity girls basketball coach at St. Joseph.
Maley, 33, teaches physical education and health.
When Maley interviewed to become an assistant boys volleyball coach, Serwat surprised her by asking if she would be willing to take over the program someday. Maley said Serwat is planning on retiring in a few more years.
“I’m really excited,” Maley said. “He coached with me and we worked great together. He gave me responsibility and he was a great mentor for me.”
Maley played for and worked under a pair of state championship coaches in Lyons’ girls volleyball coach Joann Pyritz and former Hinsdale Central girls basketball coach Steve Gross. Maley also played basketball for Dawn Schabacker.
“I will use everything (they taught),” Maley said. “In all my experiences as a player and coach, I have taken little things from each coach and used them.”
For the first time in recent years, Maley ran a summer boys volleyball camp for middle school players this summer at Hinsdale Central.
