In a three-game thriller, Guerin squad survived to play another match.
Fourth-seeded Guerin upset top-seed Latin, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23, Tuesday in a Class 3A Orr Sectional semifinals.
Seniors Alex Bojan and Amanda Middleton posted blocks that set their team up for match point, and Latin’s Catie Cronister had a hitting error that handed Guerin (18-13) a ticket to the championship match.
“We were always pushing one by one, and we just really wanted to beat Latin to get to sectional finals,” junior Rebecca Bartnicki said.
The Romans pounded the Gators in Game 1.
“They just destroyed us the first game because of (my team’s) butterflies, and they took advantage of that,” Guerin coach Dominic DiSilvio said. “We came back, and we started fighting, and that’s what helps us.”
The Gators came up big, with five hitters recording a total of 10 blocks. Bartnicki had three of those, along with six kills and senior Sara Brodner added two blocks and a team-high seven kills.
Guein committed only three service errors, as opposed to eight for Latin (21-7).
“When you miss that little amount of serves, it makes a big, big difference,” DiSilvio said.
The two teams met once during the regular season in late Sept., when the Romans won 26-24, 25-17.
Freshman Catie Cronister led the Romans with five kills and an ace, and sophomore Isabela Sessions added four kills and two aces.
Guerin will take on third-seeded Resurrection, seeking to win the program’s first sectional title.
