Girls Volleyball: Joliet Catholic turns back Marian Catholic

In a lightning-quick span over two sets Tuesday, Marian Catholic coach Ryan Summers saw the best and worst in his team.

Visiting perennial state power Joliet Catholic in both teams’ regular-season finale, the Spartans were dominant at times but faltered late, dropping a 27-25, 12-25, 18-25 East Suburban Catholic match.

“I know we lost, and we want to win every game, but I’m extremely happy with the way my girls played today,” Summers said. “To match a power like Joliet Catholic basically hit for hit, go three, make it close and fall a little short, I’m proud of them.”

Amber Clay (15 kills), Colleen Rynne (27 assists), Kendyl Todd (eight kills, five blocks), Nicole Manno (15 digs) and Taylor Byas (10 digs) led Marian Catholic (27-8, 7-2).

Marian Catholic finished tied for second in the East Suburban Catholic with Joliet Catholic, both teams finishing with 7-2 conference marks.

The Spartans squeaked out a win in Game 1, using a Joliet Catholic service error and a Jessica Brzozowski-Fryzel kill to break a tie at 25.

A fired-up Joliet Catholic squad turned the tables immediately in a dominant second game, which the Angels closed on a 14-5 run.

“In that first game we had the right mix of confidence, a little bit of fear and a lot of excitement,” Summers said. “That can overpower the nerves. In Game 2 we didn’t have enough fear until we were down 10.”

Three early Clay kills in the third game helped the Spartans go up 6-1, but four kills from Joliet Catholic’s Morgan Reardon helped turn the tide again. The Angels used an extended 15-4 run to pull away for good.

Marian Catholic will open the Class 4A playoffs Tuesday at the Shepard Regional. Even with the loss, Summers is confident the high level of play will roll over.

“(Even losing), it’s great momentum heading into the playoffs,” he said.
