Girls Volleyball: Lockport outlasts Lincoln-Way Central

With less than two weeks to go in the regular season, the potential to reach preseason goals has become a reality for many teams.

Hosting Lincoln-Way Central in a SouthWest Suburban Red match Tuesday, Lockport saw two of those goals slipping away.

Star outside hitter Aubrey Ficek helped make sure they didn’t.

“Our goals this year were to beat all the Lincoln-Ways and to be undefeated on our home court,” Ficek said. “We weren’t going to let them beat us this game.”

Ficek’s 13 kills and 14 digs helped Lockport in its 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 victory as the pursuit of a perfect 6-0 mark at home continues.

Katie Dugan (23 digs), Katie Tabisz (18 assists) and Kayla Pfeiffer (9 kills, 11 digs, 13 assists) sparked the Porters (18-8, 2-2).

Maria Brown was a force for No. 6 Lincoln-Way Central (20-7, 3-1) with 20 kills and 12 digs. Morgan Commet (17 digs), Kaitlyn Siadek (41 assists, 16 digs), Amanda Dolan (9 kills) and Jacqueline Langer (10 kills, 15 digs) also contributed.

Rachel Weis’ service run helped Lockport come back from an early deficit in the third set. The junior rattled off five points, including two aces.

In a back-and-forth battle late, Ficek’s two kills helped break a 20-all tie. A match-closing 5-1 run included two Central hitting errors and Pfeiffer’s ninth kill.

“We really buckled down in practice and worked on serve-receive, blocking and our defense,” Ficek said. “We’ve been bringing it together now.”

The Knights close the conference season with matches against Lincoln-Way East, Homewood-Flossmoor and Sandburg, and are very much still in line to defend their SouthWest Suburban Red title.

“It’s a tough two weeks, but it’s a great two weeks to help prepare for state playoffs,” Central coach Kathy Sulkowski said. “Lockport’s defense was awesome, picking everything up. We just need to do a better job of blocking and shutting down their big hitters.”
