Stephanie Korbakes, 17, of Palos Heights, is in her fourth season as a varsity player for the Astros.
How did it feel to be the South Suburban Red Player of the Year last season?
It was a great feel, a confidence-booster. I never really thought I could be that great, and getting that award meant a lot to me.
Why did you choose Shepard over some of the close-by private schools?
I loved what they were offering me. I loved being able to be in the band and play volleyball at the same time. I love the atmosphere here.
What opposing player would you love to have as a teammate?
Probably Mallory Salis (Marist). I played with her when I was in seventh and eighth grade. She was such a great teammate, so much fun.
What’s your favorite month of the year and why?
I like June. It’s the end of the school year, and our club team (1st Alliance) goes to Florida for a tournament.
How much time do you spend on the Internet?
A lot. I just sit on the couch with my iTouch and scroll on Facebook.
What totally annoys you?
The people in the hallway at school. They don’t know how to walk.
Away from school, what are some interesting things you like to do?
My brother (Johnny) and I, we go outside and play football once in a while. He’s a little sophomore. It’s a fun time tackling each other.
If you could trade places with one of your teammates for 24 hours, who would it be?
I’d say Franchesca Graffeo. She has such a busy life, it would be crazy to be her for one day.
When you look in the mirror, what does it tell you about yourself?
That I’m a strong, confident person who is nice to people.
