Lincoln-Way Central rolling along
Last season, Lincoln-Way Central set a school record with 26 victories.
It might not last long.
A 6-1 week has the Knights at 20-6. It culminated in a loss to Benet in the championship match at the St. Charles East Mizuno Cup, but there was plenty for coach Kathy Sulkowski to like.
The high point was a 25-11, 25-18 victory in the semifinals over powerhouse Joliet Catholic. In that victory, Maria Brown had 14 kills, Kaitlyn Siadek 26 assists and Morgan Comment 18 digs.
“Definitely a turning point for us,” Sulkowski said. “Morgan Reardon (of Joliet Catholic) is definitely one of the best outsides we have played this year. I thought the blockers did a great job of sticking to our game plan — taking away Reardon’s line shot and funneling her hits to Morgan (Comment).
“Morgan made some great digs for us and Brown was so explosive with her hitting (14 kills in 25 attempts, no errors). This was a great win for our team and such a confidence boost for our kids at this point in the season.”
The Knights, 3-0 in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, have key conference match-ups Tuesday at Lockport and Thursday at home vs. Lincoln-Way East.
Stagg coach Deanna Storino said she doesn’t try to overanalyze how libero Morgan Thomas goes about her work.
“Sometimes I look at where she is in the game and I say, ‘Hey, that’s not where you’re supposed to be,’ ” Storino said. “But when your defense is that outstanding, I don’t care where you are on the court as long as you keep doing what you’re doing.”
Thomas is second in the area in digs with 286. She also has served for 213 points, including 44 aces.
“She is definitely part of the reason we are 21-5 today,” Storino said. “Her ability to read the swings from the opposing team is impeccable and something that comes very natural to her. Morgan’s defense was really good last year. This year it’s at its best.”
Classroom aces, too
Marist players score more than 25 away from the court. Abbi Anderson posted a 27 on the ACT exam, Rachel Dalton a 28 and Taylor Holder a 30.
