Club season coming to end

Lindsey Piggott would love to continue playing volleyball through the AAU Junior Olympics or USA Junior Nationals, but her wish wasn’t granted this season.

The Hinsdale South middle hitter will have to settle for the Asics Junior Nationals, which begins Friday at Navy Pier in Chicago. Piggott, along with club and high school classmate Caitlin Miller, will play for the New WAVE 15-3 Fire in the Monday and Tuesday portion of the tournament.

It will be the last club tournament of the season for the duo, who began playing in December roughly a month after the high school season ended. Piggott and Miller were on different teams for the Hornets, but have united as club teammates. In the fall, the 5-foot-11 Piggott played on the freshman B team while Miller played for the sophomore team as a 5-6 outside hitter.

But the end of the season brings a few mixed emotions since the New WAVE Fire, based out of Westmont, failed to advance to the AAUs in Orlando, Fla., or even the USA volleyball tournament in Columbus, Ohio. Both of those tournaments begin later this month.

“(Chicago) is nice because it’s so close to home, but I probably would like to go somewhere,” Piggott said.

Piggott is about to end her first year of club volleyball. Her New WAVE team features players from Glenbard East, Montini, Downers Grove South and Westmont.

She started playing volleyball as a sixth grader at Gower Middle School in Burr Ridge and has played ever since. The former basketball and softball player has dropped those sports for volleyball.

“Now volleyball is my favorite,” Piggott said. “I like to play it.”

After the Asics Junior Nationals, Piggott will begin taking a driver’s education course this summer. In July, she will travel to Australia to visit Sydney and Kearns as part of a service project with the Girls Scouts. Her first trip to Australia includes working in an animal hospital.
