Girls Volleyball: Hinsdale South’s Jessica Brezwyn commits to UNC-Greensboro

Previously, Jessica Brezwyn was willing to wait until June to make a verbal commitment to a Division I women’s volleyball program.

But the Hinsdale South junior outside hitter couldn’t wait until June.

The 5-foot-9 Darien resident made her verbal commitment May 30 by deciding to play the 2013 season at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Brezwyn, the kills leader last season for the West Suburban Gold champions, made up her mind after hearing from Memphis one more time.

Memphis considered playing Brezwyn as a libero or defensive specialist, but Brezwyn wasn’t ready to make that change. She is currently playing outside hitter for Aurora-based Sports Performance 17 Mizuno, which hosts the Pre-Nationals tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Great Lake Center.

After this weekend, Brezwyn’s club team could compete in one more tournament in Ohio before ending the season at the AAU Junior Olympics, which begins June 19 at the Disney World Complex in Orlando, Fla.

“I’m very excited. I think it’s a good school to play there,” Brezwyn said. “It’s very warm. I’m very excited and can’t wait.”

Brezwyn made one previous visit to Greensboro (15-17 last season, 7-9 Southern Conference), but plans on taking an official visit later. The official signing day for volleyball players is in November.

“I wanted to go somewhere where I feel comfortable,” Brezwyn said. “I thought the campus was nice and it has pretty good academics.”

Brezwyn, who has not decided on a major, said she will consider looking at sports-related fields like sports management, athletic training or nutrition.

The Spartans lost to College of Charleston in three sets during their conference tournament last season. The team has recruited from California, but is loaded with players from the Southeast. The only two current Midwest players on the roster are libero-defensive specialist Kellie Overwiler of Mansfield, Ohio, and middle hitter Kelsey Sidney of Chesterfield, Mo.

Brezwyn said a setter from Indiana belonging to the Class of 2013 has also made a verbal commitment recently.
