Girls Soccer: Grayslake North eliminates Grant 3-1

Sophomore forward Kelly Meyer scored two goals to power host Grayslake North past Grant 3-1 Tuesday in the semifinals of the Class 2A regional girls soccer tourney.
The Knights (14-6-2) will face Lake Forest at 11 on Saturday morning for the title.
Freshman Sam Villwock also scored for the winners, while Grant (8-13-1) tallied on a PK (holding a player in the box) by Jenna Pecorini that tied the game in the 31st minute.
Villwock scored right after halftime and Meyer’s second goal came in the 63rd minute.
“We had a slow start. You could kind of tell there were some nerves,” said North coach Adam DeCaluwe. “We’re playing regionals on our home field for the first time. It was a big day for these girls. They’ve been waiting for this opportunity.
“I think this was a good step in the right direction. It’s a building block for what we have to accomplish before we face a good team like Lake Forest.”
Lake Forest beat Wauconda 9-0 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.
“We’ve been looking forward to this (the playoffs),” said Meyers. “We have a lot of seniors and we really want to finish up the season strong.
“We knew Lake Forest was a team to look out for. I think if we play the way we’re capable of, we’ll give ourselves a good shot.”
Against Grant, North had 14 shots on frame while Grant could get just four on North goalie Brooke Sauer.
“We gave a good effort. We played the full 80 minutes,” said Grant coach Mike Kennedy. “This was a fun group. We had some great senior leadership and a great group of underclassmen. Next season starts tomorrow for these girls.”
