Vernon Hills defeated Lakes 5-1 on Monday and will represent the Prairie Division in Thursday’s North Suburban Conference Championship Game.

Lake Zurich will play at Vernon Hills at 7 P.M. in the league’s title matchup.

As for the future, it also might belong to Vernon Hills.

On Monday, five Cougar starters were out with injuries, and 10 freshmen played in the blowout.

Vernon Hills is 5-0 in the division and 11-7-1 overall while Lakes finished 5-1 in the NSC Prairie and is 12-8-1 overall. Vernon Hills is hosting Antioch at 5:30 on Tuesday, but the Cougars have the tiebreaker on both Antioch and Lakes if Antioch wins the game.

“We ran our set plays well and came out and had the better play tonight,” said Vernon Hills coach Vince DeLuca.

Vernon Hills scored 37 seconds into the game on a long-range free kick from 40 yards out by Courtney Corrado.

Lakes’ Jenna Baker converted a PK early in the second half to make it 2-1, but Vernon Hills scored in the 55th minute (Kaitlin Gramins, her team-leading 11th goal), 61st minute (Alex Goldstein on a header) and 65th minute (Brianna Bahlmann) to win going away.

“If you don’t defend, you can’t expect to win,” Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said.

Vernon Hills had 13 shots on frame and another that sailed off target. Lakes had four shots on goal.

“We didn’t play tonight. Give Vernon Hills credit: They took what we gave them,” Kullby said.

As for playing 10 freshman, DeLuca noted that, “They don’t feel the pressure. They just go out and play the game.”
