Girls Soccer: Seniors lead Waubonsie Valley to Lemont Cup title

Waubonsie Valley’s girls soccer team is full of young talent, but it was two seniors that stepped up big in Saturday’s Lemont Cup championship match.

Michelle Filipek had a goal and an assist and Shannon Donelson added a goal as the Warriors defeated Sandburg 3-0.

Sophomore Kristen Dodson also scored for Waubonsie Valley (13-4-3).

“We did really well in the tournament,” Filipek said. “We’re scoring more, which is good, and we’re playing a lot better as a team.”

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Filipek connected with Donelson on a perfect long cross-field pass and Donelson’s clanked off the inside of the near post and went in.

Waubonsie had more chances late in the half, but was shut down by the Eagles (10-5-4) in the box. Sandburg’s Maggie Sobolewski broke up what could have been an opportunity to score into an open net, sweeping it out of trouble.

Filipek gave the Warriors a big insurance goal with 21:37 left in the match as she collected the ball after a scramble in the box off a corner kick and scored on a low shot.

“It just bounced around a bit, it was loose, and I just kicked it in,” Filipek said.

Dodson’s goal with 13:15 to go put the match out of reach.

Sandburg coach Desi Vuillaume was nonetheless happy with the Eagles’ performance in the tournament. Sandburg defeated Lemont 1-0 in Saturday’s semifinals on a goal from Elena Pappanastos.

“(The championship match) was our fourth game in three days and for how tired we were, I think we played a heck of a game,” Vuillaume said. “We played great the first 15 minutes and then you could see us get tired.

“I think we did really well this weekend.”

Waubonsie Valley defeated Lincoln-Way North 4-0 in the semifinals.
