Girls Soccer: Sammie Lallas’ hat trick powers Glenbrook North past Regina
Updated: May 4, 2012 9:29PM
Dominant from the opening kick, Glenbrook North handed Regina a 6-0 defeat.
The Spartans (8-5-4) grabbed the win in the first round of the 3rd annual Glenbrook Cup much to the thanks of senior Sammie Lallas.
Lallas, who is looking to break the school’s scoring record this season, netted a hat trick during the victory.
“I thought we came out strong,” junior captain Katherine Weber said. “Obviously, Regina isn’t quite to our level of competition, but it warmed us up for tomorrow and hopefully we’ll get a few wins then.”
Lallas could have made it four, but a penalty kick in the 29th minute ripped wide left.
Freshman striker Maggie Washelesky has been an enjoyment to watch for first-year head coach Craig Loch this season and she extended GBN’s lead to 2-0.
“She’s young, she’s smart and she’s a freshman,” Loch said. “You usually don’t get those connecting and she’s definitely a spark plug up top or on the outside. She’s always involved, she’s always listening and learning and the amount she’s developed over the past three to four weeks has been phenomenal.”
In the 14th minute, Washelesky played a give-and-go with Lallas and found herself behind the defense for the easy strike on goal.
Late in the match, junior Montana Paley and sophomore Allie Herriott each notched a goal to complete the scoring.
The best scoring opportunity for the Panthers came in the 66th minute as junior Annie Barens placed a free kick just wide of goal.
Glenbrook North will open Saturday’s play with the winner of the Warren-Belvidere North game at noon in the quarterfinals.
“Our touch still needs a lot of improvement and hopefully with time, it will come,” Weber said. “Hopefully that time will be short considering we have tomorrow.”
