Alexi Reyes scored with 15:01 left to break a 1-1 tie and Warren went on to beat host Zion-Benton 2-1 on Tuesday in a North Suburban Lake girls soccer matchup.
Warren’s Kenzie Verheyen scored in the 39th minute and Zion-Benton’s Hannah Magiera tallied on a PK (handball in the box) in the 47th minute to set the stage for Reyes.
Warren is now 7-7-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the division. Zion is 0-5-0 in the league.
The Blue Devils have gone 4-1-1 in their last six outings, and first-year coach Ryan McCade likes the direction his team is heading.
“We had a slow start to the season, but we’re starting to come on strong,” he said. “The adjustment period took awhile, but I’m pleased with the way the girls have performed.
“We were able to move off the ball effectively tonight and had a lot of good chances to score.”
Warren had 11 shots on frame and 25 total compared to four shots on frame for Zion.
Z-B coach Cliff Pontillo likes that his team is improving, even if the results aren’t showing it.
“It was a tough, physical game for us tonight,” he said. “We packed 10 behind the ball on defense and got our chances in transition.”
Zion had three chances late but couldn’t get a shot on net.
Warren’s goalie was Amanda Macuida and she was sharp when needed.
Next up for Warren is a tourney at Glenbrook South on Friday. Belvidere North is the opponent at 6 o’clock.
