Girls Soccer: Barrington blows past Evanston
Updated: April 21, 2012 9:22PM
Heading into Saturday’s noon contest, host Barrington and Evanston each owned a victory over St. Viator in the Naperville Invitational girls soccer tournament.
Evidently those victories didn’t mean all that much as the No. 10 Fillies led from start to finish and defeated the Wildkits 5-0. Freshman.
“We played well,’’ Szczesny said. “At halftime, we knew we had to keep up the effort and that we couldn’t let them back into the game.”
Evanston coach Tasha Nemo was sure the Fillies didn’t see her Wildkits at their best.
“That was a whipping of epic proportions,’’ Nemo said. “We were outhustled and outplayed. At halftime, I told them they needed to play hard and that they needed to play with more heart.”
Barrington goal keepers Nicole Collins (first half) and freshman Hannah Luedtke were not seriously challenged in lodging the shutout.
The Fillies came out of the gate quickly. After a near goal on a header by junior Aimee Pierce, the Fillies found the range against the Evanston defense and freshman goalie Olivia Post. Five minutes into the contest, Molly Pfeiffer found the net with a high shot. Jenna Szczesny then scored a goal 16 minutes to play before halftime.
“I was looking to place it,’’ she said. “My job is to help score goals.”
Nemo wasn’t blaming her freshman goalie, Post, for this loss.
“I know they scored on us five times but she had a good game,’’ Nemo said. “It was really bad marking by our team.”
Szczesny had another shot at another goal in the first half but this time the ball hit the post. A minute later, Pierce tapped one in for the 3-0 halftime lead.
Barrington coach Ryan Stengren was pleased with the ease of this victory. Stengren likes the way this team has come together.
“We are very much like a family,’’ he said. “We have a lot of experience.”
Barrington made sure of it in the second half. Sophomore Alex Avers scored to make it 4-0. And 30 seconds later, Sara Condon made it 5-0.
