Lyons 1, Wheaton Academy 0

Sarah Mazur dribbled the right side and drilled a shot from 22 yards for the game-winner as No. 11 Lyons beat Wheaton Academy 1-0 in the consolation round of the Pepsi Showdown Saturday at Olympic Park in Schaumburg.

“I made the move and I was surprised nobody really came up to challenge me,” Mazur said. “I made a good hit, and the ball curved inside the post.”

From there, the Lions (7-1-1) relied on the stellar keeper play of senior star Maggie Orlowski. She recorded seven saves to post her sixth shutout of the year. Twice, Orlowski made great lunging stabs that stymied free kicks by freshman Molly Thorson.

“It got a little anxious out there by the end, especially with those free kicks they had,” Orlowski said. [Senior midfielder Crystal Thomas] had a bunch of good hits out there, but fortunately I was in the right place.

“Mazur got us that early goal, and that gave us the momentum,” Orlowski said.

Wheaton Academy fell to 4-3.

Lane 3, Sycamore 1

Sofia Pavon found her groove at the right time.

The Lane freshman forward scored two goals in the second half that broke a 1-1 deadlock as the Indians beat Sycamore 3-1 in a Pepsi Showdown consolation bracket game Saturday at Olympic Park in Schaumburg.

“I was really struggling with my shot in the first half,” Pavon said. “In the second half, I got settled and I felt in a much better rhythm.”

Junior star Jasmin Carrera scored in the first half and assisted Pavon’s second goal to help solidify the advantage for Lane (7-3). “We did a good job of controlling possession, especially in the second half and not giving them many opportunities,” Carrera said.

Sycamore senior forward Emma Norris scored for the Spartans (6-6-1).
