Girls Basketball: Guerin starts fast, downs Bulls Prep

Guerin began the 2012 portion of its season still on a holiday high, running past Bulls Prep 67-25 on Wednesday night in River Grove.

Nobody reached double digits for either team, but all but one Gator got in the scorebook in the game. Senior guard Kalie DiNunno and sophomore forward Ketyra Saunders each scored nine in the victory. Junior Allison Stieber scored eight as did Bulls Prep’s leading scorer, junior Terianna McIntyer.

“We tried to work on stuff that we don’t normally do,” Stieber said about the team’s approach with a comfortable lead. “If we normally shoot (from the outside), then we’d try to go to the basket. We wanted to improve on other stuff.”

Guerin (16-3) scored the first six points of the ballgame quickly as Saunders hit a pair of buckets followed by a DiNunno basket that prompted a Bulls’ timeout. The Garors led 18-4 after one quarter and 37-8 by the half.

Sophomore forward Becky Bartnicki added seven points while junior center Sara Brodner had six for the Gators.

“It was more just about cheering for our teammates to keep ourselves and them motivated,” Stieber said about the game’s atmosphere. “I feel like right now we can go really far if we keep it up and not lose focus.”

Bulls Prep (5-9) picked things up a bit in the second half, scoring 17 points including 11 in the fourth quarter. Junior Jessica Mata added six points in the loss.
