Girls Basketball: Guerin has little trouble with Luther North

Guerin continued its hot streak scoring the first 12 points of the game en route to a convincing 59-26 victory over Luther North in a nonconference tilt on Monday night in River Grove. Senior Kalie DiNunno led all scorers with eight of her 14 points in the first quarter and making four shots from long range on the night. The win ran the Gators’ streak to 10 games.
“We went at them like gangbusters,” said Guerin coach Johnnie Gage. “When you swing at a bee, you’d better make sure it’s dead, and Luther North wasn’t able to. If you just knock the bee down, you’re going to get stung.”
The Gators (23-3) allowed only four field goals in the entire first half as they forced the visiting Wildcats into turnovers time and again as Guerin recorded 27 steals. They led 26-9 by the half and 45-14 after three quarters. Senior Jackie and sophomore Becky Bartnicki each scored nine points for the Gators with all of Jackie’s coming on three-pointers and Becky grabbing 11 rebounds. Juniors Sara Brodner and Allison Stieber and senior Molly Campbell each contributed eight in the victory.
“I think we played really well as a team, and it was fun because everybody got a chance to play,” Brodner said. “I’ve been focusing more on my defense and boxing out, but I was able to get some points down low.”
Luther North (4-22) was led by junior Caitlyn Wheeler’s 13 points. She took a while to find her shot but wound up making three shots from beyond the arc.
“We started the season and would get blown out, but we’ve been competitive ever since Christmas,” said Luther North head coach Chuck Rombout. “Our games have been coming down to the last two or three minutes, but we’ve had some injuries, and our defense has suffered.”
