Girls Basketball: Sophomores carry Carmel past Waukegan
Updated: January 18, 2012 10:09PM
A trio of sophomores helped visiting Carmel knock off Waukegan 46-35 on Wednesday night in a nonconference game at the Dog Pound.
The Corsairs (12-8) got 15 points from guard Kathleen Felicelli, eight points from Leah Lach, and seven from Cassidy Kloss. All are 10th-graders.
“Still, Carmel coach Kelly Perz is looking for better play from her squad.
“We’re 20 games into the season, and we’re still struggling with consistency,” she said. “I don’t think we’ve played a complete game all year.
“That’s what we’ll be working on the next few weeks. It’s getting to that point.”
Against the Bulldogs (2-16), Carmel led 22-12 at halftime, but let Waukegan get within 29-24 with 2:52 left in the third quarter. But Carmel then scored nine straight to regain control.
Sophomore guard TyVene Scafe had 15 points and six steals for the Bulldogs. Syerra Cunningham, a presence in he post, had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
“If you’ve seen our scores this year, there’s been a nice turnaround,” said Waukegan coach Brandon Brown. “We’ve been focusing on one game at a time ... one quarter at a time. That’s what we need to continue to do.
“Last year against Carmel, it was over after a quarter, so we’re seeing improvement.”
Waukegan’s win this year are over Maine East and a good Streamwood squad.
Carmel will be back in action Saturday, facing Nazareth Academy in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.
Waukegan is at Glenbrook South on Friday.
