Girls Soccer: Sport plagued by concussions

The results of an 11-year study by the American Public Health Association determined that girls soccer trailed only football as the sport with the highest rate of concussion incidence (0.35 per 1,000 athletic exposures). The same study showed that girls, when playing the same sport as boys, have twice the concussion rate.

Naperville North midfielder Hunter Drendel was one of many players who walked off the field in tears last year following a 1-0 loss to Granite City in the Class 3A state championship game. Drendel was again in tears Saturday night, but for a much different reason. The senior was shedding tears of joy after winning a state title.

St. Charles North’s Kelly Manski’s short kick from the left corner found Lauren Koehl near the top of the left side of the penalty area and Koehl turned and fired a 15-yard shot into the lower right corner of the net just 86 seconds into the contest. That goal held up for a 1-0 victory over Barrington in Tuesday’s Class 3A Barrington Supersectional.
