St. Patrick got a wake-up call when it dropped the second set of its match against host Young Friday in a sectional semifinal. The Shamrocks then and moved on to the sectional final with a 25-22, 14-25, 25-17 win.
“We expected to be this far last year, but it didn’t happen,’’ St. Patrick setter John Budzinski said. “We didn’t want that to happen again, so we had to regroup to pull it out.’’
The sub-.500 Shamrocks (17-19) were unfazed in the first set, going toe-to-toe with the top-seeded Dolphins. The first set totaled 10 ties, including at 19-19. But a Young (26-10) service error gave the Shamrocks the lead for good at 21-20, and the visitors scored four of the next five points to close out the set.
Young didn’t allow the disappointing finish to the first set to get to them as they came out blazing in the second set. Behind the serving of setter Jack Tracy, Young ran out to a 6-0 lead and didn’t look back. The hosts forced St. Patrick into 10 errors.
“We didn’t expect them to be this good,’’ Budzinski said of the second set. “We knew we could beat them, we played them earlier in the year and despite losing, knew we were better. We just took them lightly and didn’t think they were as good as they are.’’
The third went back and forth until a service error gave the Shamrocks the lead for good at 9-8. St. Patrick extended the lead to 20-12.
Joseph Williams led St. Patrick with seven kills, while Jack Benson added six.
Okello Hope had a match-high 14 kills for Young. Tom Wesolowski added nine kills and Ben Schwister seven.
