Boys Volleyball: Payton tops Leyden, cruises into sectional final

Last week in its Public League final loss, Payton looked defeated and seemingly played with no confidence. That all changed in a week, as the Grizzles rolled into the Young Sectional final, defeating Leyden 25-18, 25-19 Friday.
“We just regrouped after last week,’’ Grizzlies outside hitter Earl Schultz said. “Our emotions were too tense. We played not to lose, instead of playing aggressive and playing to win. We cant do that.’’
Payton looked a lot more calm against the Eagles, opening a 3-0 lead in Game 1, but Leyden wouldn’t go away. Every time Payton went on a run, the Eagles answered.
A Jacob Lazzorotto error gave the Grizzlies a 17-16 lead and ignited an 8-2 run to end the first set. Payton forced Leyden into seven errors in the run, while Schultz had a kill for the eighth point.
The second set was also a back-and-forth affair until Hans Friedl put a ball down to make the score 13-12 in favor of Payton. The Grizzles would not relinquish the lead as they went on a 13-7 run to end the match.
Schultz led Payton (26-10) with 10 kills, while Perry Howell added eight. Daniel Nevarez had seven kills, and Misael Delgado added six for the Eagles (18-21).
The Grizzlies move on to play St. Patrick for the Sectional title Tuesday.
“We know they’re a good team (St. Patrick), but we’re a good team too,’’ said Schultz. “We know what we have to do to win and we just have to go out and do it.’’
