Fuentes brothers lead Lane past Payton

Sergio and Jose Fuentes are more than just brothers. They are twins.
They are also the focal points of Lane’s soccer team. When one speaks, the other typically listens.
Sergio Fuentes scored a goal and assisted his brother on another goal as the host Indians scored all three goals in the first half in blanking Payton 3-0 in opening day of round robin play in the Public League soccer tournament Tuesday night.
“Our coach [Andrew Ricks] always says to score quickly and that starts the momentum,” Jose Fuentes said.
Senior forward Jose Morales took the advice to heart. Morales scored on a header off a beautiful feed from senior forward Adalberto Rojas just two minutes into the game’s start.
The Indians (10-7-1) never looked back. At the 14-minute mark, Jose Fuentes scored on a beautiful cross from his brother Sergio. “I told him to pass it to me,” Jose Fuentes said.
Lane dominated most of the first half possession time. In the second half, with the comfortable margin, Lane was content to hold the ball. The Grizzlies (10-5-2) managed just four shots on goal.
Sergio Fuentes ended the Indians’ dominant first half by smashing in a left footer off a terrific through ball by senior forward Andy Piszczor. “We play an aggressive style, and once we got the first goal, our attitude was just to keep attacking and to score again as often as possible,” Sergio Fuentes said.
Senior keeper Zorohn Reed collected four saves in notching his fourth save of the year for the Indians.
