Boys Soccer: Jared Moelaart leads Stevenson to first state semi

In the end, Stevenson didn’t need the wind to win.

With gusts up to 30 miles per hour blowing from the north during Tuesday’s 3A supersectional, senior Jared Moelaart scored both of his goals against the wind to lead the Patriots to a 2-0 win against Glenbrook North, helping to advance the program to its first state final four.

“We’ve always played better against the wind, which is why we chose the wind in the first half,” Stevenson coach Mark Schartner said. “They just don’t quit.”

Glenbrook North appeared to head into halftime with the advantage. It neutralized the wind-aided Stevenson attack , which generated five corners in the first half. But with the wind at their backs for the final 40 minutes, the Titans relinquished runs to the Patriots.

In the 47th minute, Moelaart broke the scoreless tie when he bounced a shot off Spartans goalkeeper Jack Pucin’s left hand that rolled into the net. Forty-two seconds later off a direct kick, Moelaart broke his mark and headed the kick from junior Michael Dobin past Pucin for a 2-0 lead.

It was a back breaker for Glenbrook North, unable to test Patriots senior goalkeeper Quentin Low for most of the game.

“We just needed that one goal and I was confident we would [get it]. It just didn’t work out,” Glenbrook South coach Paul Vignocchi said.

After winning its first sectional title in 19 years, Stevenson will now have the opportunity to play for the program’s first state championship.

“It’s a great feeling, the fact it’s never been done before,” senior Ross Comitor said. “We want to leave a legacy behind.”

Stevenson plays Naperville Central Friday in the state semifinals. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lincoln-Way North.
