Boys Soccer: Metea Valley captures first regional title

Metea Valley senior Jake Goehring was planning on going out with friends on Saturday night.

There’s little doubt he was the one dominating the conversation.

Goehring scored off a rebound with 9:27 left in the second half to lift the Mustangs to a 1-0 victory over West Chicago in Saturday afternoon’s Class 3A Metea Valley Regional championship.

It was the first regional title in Metea Valley’s brief boys soccer history.

“It feels so amazing,” Goehring said. “I scored the goal, we win 1-0. It’s just so awesome.”

Goehring anticipated a cross coming in the box and ran it down, securing possession and tapping the rebound in.

“We had some opportunities early but we didn’t finish,” Metea Valley coach Josh Robinson said. “We finally finished one and reached the goal of a regional championship. I’m very proud of what they’ve done.”

West Chicago (14-7-3) beat the Mustangs 3-0 on Aug. 27. This time it was the Mustangs posting the shutout.

Gabe Gongora managed the defense in goal, playing behind senior defenders Max Gierczak, Evan Cudone, Jack Staton and Andrew Shin. Gongora has been spending some time on the field, often splitting halves with the more-than-capable Ian Jindrich, but for this match he put in a full-time shift in the net.

“To shut out a team like West Chicago is pretty amazing and all of our defenders were top-notch,” Gongora said. “They always listen and they busted their butts the whole time.”

The Wildcats had a couple late chances where they came close to putting in the equalizer. With 4:24 remaining, Leo Robles nearly sent in a blind header but propelled it a bit too high. Later, with just 1:17 left, Daniel Hernandez collected a long rebound but couldn’t elude Gongora on a 35-yard boot.

“West Chicago does a nice job of knocking the ball around and they possessed well in the midfield, but I was proud with how we battled them,” Robinson said. “The kids stuck to what we asked them to do and now they’ve won a regional championship because of it.”
