Palatine out scored Buffalo Grove 4-1 in penalty kicks to earn a 2-1 victory in the Mid-Suburban League championship. The victory was the Pirates third MSL Cup in eight years and first since 2009.
“We just went undefeated (in conference), we won conference. Everyone knew we would make it here and we did,” said Palatine defenseman Matt Fleischhauer, who scored the game-winning penalty shot.
Buffalo Grove (12-6) scored its lone goal in the game’s 48th minute. Alberto Eloyza possessed the ball just outside the Palatine goalie box. He sent in a center ball to the feet of Demo, who fired a shot that ricocheted off Pirates goalkeeper Kyle Leber. In perfect position for the rebound, Figueroa gathered the ball, then rolled a shot into the back of the Palatine net.
Palatine (16-1-3) tied the game with 3:17 remaining when Jeremy Velinski headed a ball past Bison goalie Dillon Eaton for a Pirates goal.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the Bison managed just one penalty kick score to the Pirates four. Fleischhauer’s goal sealed the win for Palatine in the Pirates fourth penalty shot attempt.
“We did a great job defending their set pieces until the end,” Buffalo Grove coach Rick Carlson said. “It was a great game. We played well.”
