Boys Soccer: Vernon Hill’s Evan Borden scores hat trick

It was a memorable senior night for Vernon Hills. For one player in particular, it’s a night he may never forget.

The Cougars defeated Grant 3-1 on the school’s brand new turf field. All of their offense came from senior Evan Borden, the Cougars’ high-scoring forward who netted his second career hat trick. Two of his goals were set up by fellow senior Matt Tabrizi.

“Before the season there were two games I marked down that we had to win. First one on the turf and senior night. We’ve done both,” said Borden, who has 14 goals on the season.

Borden got two in the first half. When a goal by Grant’s Andres Velarde cut the lead to 2-1 in the 50th minute, Borden struck minutes later as he took a feed from Tabrizi at his feet, beautifully guiding a shot from the right box across the goal, finding the back of the net’s left side.

The victory gives the Cougars a winning record in the North Suburban Prairie (8-3-1, 2-1-1) and a strong shot at the divisional title.

“We wanted to get back on track especially because this was a conference game,” said Vernon Hills coach Vince DeLuca. “I have a lot respect for our seniors and wanted tonight to be special for them.”
