After struggling to put the ball in the net of late, Warren regained its early-season, high-scoring form on Monday, crushing visiting Lake Forest 5-1 in a North Suburban Conference Lake Division match.
The Devils (11-2-1 overall, 3-1-0 in the NSC Lake) will host Zion-Benton on Thursday at 7:15.
Lake Forest (5-6-1, 1-2-0) plays Stevenson on Thursday.
Warren got goals from Tony Severini (14th minute), Daniel Szczepanek (15th), Dan Hengesh (36th), Nick Wegrzenowicz (39th) and Timmy Pieper (69th on a PK), while the Scouts could counter only with Peter Passalino’s PK in the 30th minute.
“One of the things we’ve talked about is getting up, and having a team score on us while we backed down or lost focus,” said Warren coach Jason Ahonen. “In those situations, we haven’t been putting the pressure on to get the goal back, plus some.
“We have a lot of proven scorers. Hopefully, today was a step in the right direction toward fixing that and leading us toward the playoffs.”
Severini was glad to get his first goal of the season on Monday.
“It’s taken awhile to get used to the fact that people are going to score on us,” Severini said. “But I think we’ve learned that if we just keep playing, we have the firepower to win every game.”
On the other side, Lake Forest coach Rob Perry was disappointed with his team’s showing against a quality foe.
“They played a different game than us,” Perry said. “They were compact vertically and concentrated horizontally. Everywhere I looked, I saw three blue shirts (Lake Forest) and five white shirts (Warren).
“Warren really worked hard.”
