Boys Soccer: Inspired New Trier wins for coach Craig Fairbairn

On the day New Trier honored retiring coach Craig Fairbairn, the Trevians got enough offense early to earn a 3-2 win over Lake Forest.

Phillipe Boury scored in the second minute of the game off a textbook pass from Sean Gutherie, and Alex Kikos and David Resnekov added goals in the first half to carry the Trevians (9-3) to the victory.

Peter Passalino made the match interesting with a goal in the 13th minute of the second half, but the Scouts (5-5-1) couldn’t find the equalizer.

“It was huge to win this game,” senior defender Kevin Bode said. “Coach Fairbairn has meant so much to the program. It was bad to lose to Evanston, so we were digging deep to win this one.”

The school recognized Fairbairn’s tenure at the half and announced the veteran coach will be inducted into the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame later this year.

Fairbairn entered his final season with state championships in 2006 and 2008, 16 regional titles, eight sectional titles and eight CSL South championships.

“Winning made the day even more special than it already was,” said Fairbairn, who’s in his 21st as head coach. “Losing might have left a little sour taste, but it’s all been so nice.”
