Locked in a tight affair with Lincoln-Way North at halftime Thursday night, Lincoln-Way East started scoring points in threes to pull away for their second straight Medieval Classic title.

The host Griffins hit five three-pointers in the second half and got two more three-point plays the old-fashioned way, turning a 29-28 halftime deficit into a 61-50 win.

“We work a lot on making layups and shooting the three,” East coach Rich Kolimas said. “So we should be able to make them when they’re uncontested.”

Jay Yancy, who poured in 25 points, had eight rebounds and was named Tournament MVP, hit two triples for East (7-5) in the third quarter as the Griffins grabbed a 48-41 lead. Gavin Walsh scored seven of his 14 points in the frame.

Walsh and Ryan Hayes hit treys and Eric Spudic (seven points) converted a three-point play all in the first three minutes of the fourth as East put the game away, extending the lead to 57-46.

“The first half, the team was a bit timid so I took a lot of shots,” Yancy said. “In the second half, everyone picked it up.”

Yancy kept the Griffins afloat in the first half, pouring in 17 points and putting on a show that included three three-pointers, a thunderous dunk and some nifty drives to the hoop.

“I was just on today,” Yancy said. “I was feeling it. Every time I touched the ball I felt like I wanted to shoot because I felt like it was going to go in.”

Daryle Morgan (18 points, nine rebounds), Cody Murphy (11 points, six rebounds) and Denton Wallace (nine points) led North (5-11), which was 2-10 entering the week but went 3-1 in the tournament.

“Last week, I felt like digging a hole and crawling into it,” North coach John Terry said. “This week, I feel pretty good about our team.”
