Bogan’s young team turned heads and scared the kings of the Red-South last year, giving both Morgan Park and Simeon everything they could handle. The No. 6 Bengals seemed poised for big things this season-then 6-7 Moshawn Thomas and 6-7 Jawan Savage transferred to Hyde Park.

Despite the transfers, senior guards Ronnell Buckner and Kendall Wesley are not without a dependable post option, as senior Devonte Smith proved on Wednesday, scoring 24 points and grabbing five rebounds in a 68-38 win over Vocational.

“When they left I knew I was going to have a great opportunity,” Smith said. “I’m a senior now and I’m ready to step up.”

The Bengals (7-0, 1-0 Red South) opened the game with a 13-1 burst and never looked back.

Junior Juwan Henry scored 14 and Wesley added 11. Buckner was in foul trouble throughout the game and finished with seven points.

“I think we’ve got the talent to win a championship,” Smith said. “I’m not sure why anyone would want to leave this team.”

Senior Dantrelle Freeman scored 11 and grabbed 12 points for the Cavaliers (6-2, 0-1), but leading scorer Robert Hurd was held to just nine points.
